Unity Over Accuracy

At the beginning of a day, a job, a season, a life, I'll take unity over accuracy. Both are important. And often, both can be accomplished with planning, communication, and utilizing the abilities of all involved.

This past week was a big week for soybeans in southern Iowa with bins, elevators, and processors full. In our operation, the further north we went, the less damage showed up in soybean samples. Soybean moisture stayed in that 11-13% range which helps harvest loss.

It was also a big week for corn harvest. Most fields have firmed up, although there are still wet areas. Most full season corn moisture is now down to safe storage levels. Corn piles are starting to show up in many elevators.

Involving grandkids in harvest responsibilities is a good example of unity over accuracy. There must be boundaries for staying safe. There must be patience and understanding. There must be encouragement and affirmation. But like the rest of us, accuracy comes with practice and on the job training.

K (Karl) and K (Kristin) Seed's Becks inventory is starting to come in for 2027 planting season. It makes reality set in at with just one week of October left, how much has to be accomplished yet this fall.

You've heard it here often, however it can't be overstated that life on the farm could not happen without understanding gals and families. And supper in the field is icing on the cake.

Unlike many family farms, in our family operation, we are more of a combination of operations rather than a full fledged family partnership. The benefits of that is independence for individual families, ability for next generations to have full responsibility and hopefully, rewards, and efficiency with machinery and help. The downside is when going from one field to the next, partial loads are written on phone notes as we move on, and agreeing on what's next most important. It takes unity with as much accuracy as possible, and caring about each other as much or more than self.

At the end of the day, the job, the week, with a full moon rising, showing God's presence and glory, and yes, even a life, unity will be remembered and treasured longer than accuracy. Military operations, business operations, and even farming operations often have a "person" that decides what's going to happen next, and folks follow in line for accuracy's sake. I am trying my best not to be that person.

"Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind." 1 Peter 3:8
