Life After Fieldwork

It has been a wonderful fall. Harvest seems like it's been months ago. Fertilizer application and tillage for next years crop are finished for the most part. Most of us have spent the last two weeks moving dirt. Kurt and his friend Mitchell are helping BJ tile. Mike helped build a pond west of Ottumwa and is now building terraces. Mark is excavating with his trackhoe. I have been cleaning terraces and shaping waterways. In this picture Kristen and her little cousin Renae are helping Karl run scraper.

FM business radios have always been part of our family farming operation. We have mobile radios in our equipment and talk in the field and even between jobs. Every family has a base radio so the girls can talk to each other, call their husbands, know what's going on if we're working at night, or turn it off if it gets boring. Here Ezra is calling Grandpa to tell him they have just put up their Christmas tree.

Yesterday was opening day of dear hunting season. A couple of boys went hunting with their friends. We get quite a few requests with folks asking permission to hunt on our ground and I usually try and accomidate them but it can get difficult sometimes. If I say no they consider me a grouch for the rest of the year and when I say yes it can get a little like shopping on Black Friday.

We have been busy selling and getting in seed for next years crop. This used to be a winter job but with early cash incentives and farmers planning ahead most seed purchaces are finished by the first of the year. Our family is having Seed Days the end of this week to finish up year end business and to just visit with customers and enjoy Christmas goodies.

Jan decided to paint the garage area of our cabin and needed a lift so we accomidated her by having her stand in a seed pro box lifted by our forklift. I was her forklift operator and was careful to move her slowly and as smoothly as possible.

Jan is averaging around two to three reservations a week for families and groups using the cabin during the holidays. Here I'm helping her decorate so it has a Christmas atmosphere for our guests.
